Sometimes, I feel like I can obsess just a TAD over the strangest things. Today, that thing is wood grain. I'm working on a new printable wedding collection and it might just have a tad bit of wood grain in it - sounds a little odd but I promise you will be in LOVE.

Also, and I bet you didn't know this about me, I am a closet scrapbooker. I enjoy it. I hope this doesn't mean you won't be my friend anymore? I'm still me... just scrapbookier. Lately, to conserve money, I have found that digital scrapbooking might be a more cost effective way to go. Here are a couple of my new digital pages.

Today, some of my girlfriends and sisters are coming over to scrapbook. I hope they bring junk food?

SPACE.... the Final Frontier!

Seeing as how I am the s-l-o-w-e-s-t blogger on the planet, it's looking like time I put up some information about the Space Party we had for my 5 year old a few weeks back.

Let me back up.... for Christmas this last year, "Santa" gave my son an astronaut suit, complete with helmet. He is a bit obsessed with "Star Wers, Dark Vader and Life Savors" (his words, not mine), so I thought we could broaden his horizons a bit and get him imagining space as a whole rather than just "Luke the Sky Walker".

What with 50% of the Paper & Cake printable partyware team being, well, ME, I made the executive decision to design a Space Printable Birthday Party collection. I figured if my son was into it, there was a good chance he was not alone.

Invitation

So, here is the invite - Kira (the other 50% of Paper & Cake) worked so hard designing all the illustrations. Here is the beauty of it, this is available in our store, so all you have to do is type your own info into it using Acrobat Reader, a free download from adobe.com. Easy, right?

Decorations

I could not WAIT to share this part of the decorations with you all. Because it is budget central over here at the Barnes house (our family is on a mission to save save save wherever possible) I was really excited to have the opportunity to use a giant plastic bin full of Space related paraphernalia that my dad gave me from his days working at JPL. Pins, buttons, maps, photos, illustrations, you name it - the perfect bunch of stuff to choose from!

So, using two frames I had in the closet, I removed the glass and covered the cardboard filler with silver sparkly scrapbooking paper. The pins and buttons are just stuck in to the backing - no tape or glue needed. Two sets of 3M removable picture hangers did the trick to hang them above the table near the front door.

Next, I put together photo collages using brightly colored photographs of Saturn, various moons, and mars, to hang above the fireplaces. These were held together with Fotoclips (tiny plastic fasteners), and secured to the wall using some blue painters tape.

For some added interest, I placed this "Mars" book (from the plastic bin) and several space themed library books on tables around the house.

In addition, you can bet that I used pennant banners, lawn dots and garlands GALORE from our Space Printable Birthday Party collection. They are SO easy - just print on cardstock on your home color printer, and cut. For the lawn dots, I added wooden skewers to the back to stick them into the lawn along the front walkway.

Activity

Usually I offer a craft project or two at the kids parties, but this time - and knowing the guest list, I put up activity tables instead. I ordered some small astronaut action figures from amazon and paired them with home made play dough. Neon food coloring is the secret to this popular activity.

Another inexpensive project for the kids to work on is legos - especially when you use the ones you already own. Just set them out in buckets on a big table, and that's it.

We were also fortunate that my husband was able to finish building the play structure in the backyard (the morning of the party!) just in time! I Wrapped it with 7 dollars worth of silver organza, and attached a few "control panels" with buttons and knobs on loan from some friends at his office.

And now, for the piéce de résistance... the moment you have all been waiting for....

the hover craft!

I'm not kidding. One of my husband's friends made a hover craft. Well, it's kind of more like a hover board because only one person can ride at a time, but still. The kids went CRAZY for it. Well here, let me show you:

Jack and his friends enjoyed themselves so much, that even Jack's preschool teacher had to try it out!

Cake

One word for you.... Cupcakes. When you have this much party planning to do, why not make it easy on yourself, for once! Here is my secret, please don't tell anyone! Use box-of-cake-mix (any kind will do) but make your own frosting. A nice vanilla cream cheese buttercream will do nicely, and make the cupcakes taste as though they are from scratch as well.

Now, because I was feeling a little guilty for not making a whole cake (have you seen my cakes? they can be a tad bit on the labor intensive side), I planned a really cool cupcake stand instead. I took two kraft paper "hat" boxes ($3.25 ea from the Fabric Barn), and one round cake board, and covered them in the same matching gray sparkly scrapbooking paper I've been using for other party items. I also took a little bit of the ribbon from the hanging garlands, and wrapped that around and around.

Leaving the silver foil baking cups on the cupcake, I frosted, added a matching cupcake pick, and set them around the hat boxes. The cupcake picks from this Space Printable Birthday set could not be easier! Print on cardstock and use a 2" punch (or scissors) to cut out, then tape or glue to a toothpick - that's it!

Food

Food is not my favorite party item to plan/prepare/shop for, I've been lucky enough to do a bit of a trade lately with Kira, and I really think it works out well for both of us. She made stars and moon shaped sandwiches, and giant platters of fruit. We also had Chips and Salsa, Lemonade, Ice Tea and a super creative Cereal Bar.

Wrap Up

Okay, let me just say that the party was WAY easier and shorter for that matter than this blog post. I'll wrap up my 17 volume tome by saying, "I love a good party!". I really really love throwing a good party, especially one that is home made and on a budget.

Jack had a SPECTACULAR time at the party, in fact, we haven't even taken down the decorations yet (it's only been a month), and we listen to his space music EVERY day. Every. Day. Let me know if you have any questions, or you have your own Space themed party to share.

For the past 6 years, I have participated in the Multiple Sclerosis 50 Mile Challenge Walk from Carlsbad to San Diego, California. I walk for my best friend of over 26 years, Rita, who was diagnosed the same year my daughter was born - 2002. Now, to participate in the walk, you have to raise a MINIMUM of $2,500 by September... well, I thought I should get started!

I'm planning a space ship, moon sand, a rocket craft project, hunting for moon rocks and cake. Of course cake. So far so good, don't you think?

The Magic of Oreos

Two words: Oreo Buttercream.

8 oz. unsalted softened butter
4 c. powdered sugar
2 T milk
2 t. vanilla extract
2 t. fresh lemon juice
12-14 Oreos, finely crushed in food processor (centers and all!)
Bag of mini oreos - for garnish

In a stand mixer, fitted with a paddle attachment, add 1/2 the powdered sugar plus all of the other ingredients. Beat until moistened. Scrape down the bowl. Add the rest of the powdered sugar and the oreos. If the frosting is still too thick, you can add a tiny bit of milk at a time until it reaches the desired consistency. Garnish with one mini oreo per cookie, alternatively, you can cut the full size cookies in half and insert half into each cupcake.

Pink Camouflage Birthday - Part two

In part two of this fabulous birthday party how-to, I will do my best to explain the cake. Sadly, I neglected to take photos of exactly what I did, but I promise it was easier than you might think!

The Cake

Using 2 boxes of cake mix, I made 2 six inch round cakes and 2 eight inch round cakes. After they cooled, I took a serrated knife and leveled them by cutting the tops off. Place the bottom layer of the 8 inch cake on a cardboard round (you can buy them or make your own) cover the top with filling or frosting, and put the top layer on. Repeat for the smaller cake. Keeping each two layer cake separate, "dirty ice" or frost with a thin layer of buttercream to make the surface smooth for the fondant to stick to. Refrigerate.

Now for the fun part!

The Fondant

fondant become the cornerstone of the Camouflage pattern

1) Buy or make fondant icing. The store bought kind has a chart on the side to tell how much you need for what size cake.
2) Pull out a chunk of fondant from the bucket and weigh it for the 8" 2 layer cake, then add a bit of pink food coloring and knead it in. Pull off three much smaller pieces and add pink food coloring to make three additional shades of pink (light to dark).
3) Take your main piece of light pink fondant shape it into a 5-6" disk, press several small snake shaped pieces of the other shades of pink fondant into it - do this randomly, with some overlapping.
4) Using a rolling pin and a bit of powder sugar (so it won's stick to the work surface or the rolling pin) roll out the fondant to a thickness of no more thank 1/4" thick.
5) Your rolled fondant piece will look like camouflage!
6) Place the rolled piece of fondant over the 8" layer cake. Smooth the fondant over the top and along the sides using your hands, working it so there are no wrinkles. Trim off any excess fondant with a knife or pizza cutter.
7) Repeat with second layer cake.

The Decorative Border

cut WAY more than you think you might use... you will use them!

1) While the leftover fondant is still rolled out on the table, take a small biscuit cutter or pastry tip and cut circles out of the camouflage fondant.
2) Roll the circles into little fondant balls - they will all be fairly similar in size.

The Assembly

1) Place the larger round cake on a plate or cake stand.
2) Take 3 straws, cut to the height of the 8" layer cake, and insert them in a triangle pattern in the center area of the cake to support the weight of the 2nd tier.
3) Place the 6" cake on top, in the center.
4) Put a small dot of leftover buttercream (in a pastry bag with a tip) at the base of the bottom cake and cover with a camo fondant ball - repeat, repeat, repeat until the bases of both stacked tiers are encircled with fondant balls.

The Adventure

My daughter is obsessed with mysteries and clues and scavenger hunts! That is why I planned on planning a scavenger hunt for the main event at her party. Unfortunately, it was scheduled to rain, and here in Southern California, if we go outside in the rain, we melt.

So, an indoor activity it was! I made 8 "challenge cards" for each individual child. The challenges ranged from simple codes (alphabet letters corresponding with numbers), map questions (where is New Orleans), to questions they had to "Google" to find the answer (my sister was in charge of helping the kids on the computer) to my absolute favorite: "Kid vs. Food" - eat a veggie (from the crudité platter) that you've never eaten before. That one was so funny!

I did use several of the challenges over again for different kids, like draw a self portrait, put a puzzle together, or build a 3 ft tall tinker toy structure. And I did attempt to gear the question for the individual (age, sex, interest).

After solving one challenge, the child brought proof of their answer to the "Command Central" table - my friend Julia. Their challenge card was stamped and their passport (oh, I forgot to tell you about the passport) stamped as well. They exchanged their solved challenge for a new one, and after solving all of them (or as many as they wanted to) they received a bag of camouflage MnMs.

The Result

All in all, this party was well worth the effort - just look at that cute little girl...oops! I mean look at that grown up 8 year old, she loved every minute of it! Pink Camouflage Adventure Birthday - part one

I know, I know, "Pink Camouflage Adventure Birthday Party" is a serious mouthful of a theme, but man did we have a good time with it!

Invitation

Oh so inspired by my daughter's love of the color pink and obsession with solving mysteries, we came up with the idea to use camouflage as a basic decoration for her theme. We decided that the main event of the party would be a "scavenger hunt" type of activity, so a globe, a compass, binoculars and some stars were only fitting elements to add to her invite.

I created this invitation using Adobe Illustrator, but you could easily use sheets of scrapbooking paper and add your party information by printing it on a sheet of vellum or very light weight stationery paper.

Decorations

You try finding ANY party decorations online or elsewhere that are pink camouflage. I looked, trust me, really hard. Now generally one might feel a little hopeless, and change the party theme, but not me... not when I have a direct hot line to the girls at Paper & Cake (its a free call too).

Pennant banners, water bottle labels, cupcake picks, favor tags.... anything I could dream up - I designed, printed, cut out and installed - much to the dismay of my oh so patient husband.

Craft & Party Favors

The Craft and Party Favors for this party came hand in hand. I decided to create a "satchel" to contain adventure assisting equipment such as binoculars, spy sunglasses and bandanas. You know where I'm going with this.... yup, Aunt Janet to the rescue - again. I found some pink camo fabric at Jenny's Fabric (in Fountain Valley for all you So. Cal residents), and picked up regular green camo fabric at Jo-Ann's.

Using some webbing and d-rings I picked up at the Fabric Barn, my Aunt Janet, my mom and I came up with a "fanny pack" style bag using about 1/4 yard for each one. We had to make a total of 15 little bags, so they had to be super simple! I've attached some illustrated diagrams here for you to make your own. I bet you could even put these together with fabric glue if you don't want to sew them.

Now that you've seen the party favor bag - here is what we did to make it part of the craft project of the party. Using borrowed stencils, and paint that I already had, I had the kids stencil their new camo fanny packs, with black, white or purple paint. Just open the flap up, and tape it to the table to keep it steady - we also taped the stencil if it was complex.

Although it took WAY too long to dry - it was totally worth it! (I ended up using a hair dryer on them while the kids ate snacks)

Our Birthday Party Season

Yes, it's January, and the "Season of Birthdays" is about to begin in this house. I do get excited! and at the same time have a bit of a feeling of dread. How will I pull this off and at the same time get any work done?

And that is where I start to ask for some help.

HELP!

Let's back up here....

First up is my daughter's 8th (yes, EIGHTH!) birthday party, and the theme is "Adventure". To decorate that theme she has chosen all things pink camouflage. So cute! I, of course, am designing a printable partyware collection that we can use - pennant banners, cone party hats, signage, favor tags, etc.

Here is the problem: I can not find anything out there with a pink camo pattern that I can use for tote bags, or bandannas, or craft projects, or for party favors. Has anyone used this theme? or seen anyone who has used this theme?

And, (here is a plea for my Aunt Janet) um, Aunt Janet? Will you "help" me make some tote bags from pink camo fabric? Assuming I can find some? Please?

Lets see what else... Oh! I'm going to try to use fondant! My plan is to make a cake, cover it with white (?) fondant and then paint it to be camouflaged. In pink. Where/what kind of fondant do I use? I don't necessarily need to make the fondant, I would be okay with purchasing it. Anyone? Anyone?

Let's see... I guess that's it for today. So, let me know if you have any ideas for me.

I Mean Well...

I mean well. I do. I mean to be a great blogger, and bring lots of ideas for throwing GREAT parties at home. But sometimes, things just get in the way. So. Let's see... where shall I pick up again.

How about a little story about cupcakes? 80 of them.

My daughter attends a charter school, and they are money raising machines! Not that they raise much money, but there is always a raffle or an auction or a bake sale going. In planning the school's "Christmas Pageant" (which by the way has nothing to do with Christmas per say, because of the diverse nature of the school... which is why it is called "Peace and Human Rights Night") parents were asked to bring food to "sell" during the evening's events. I signed up for - what else - cupcakes.

After a complete breakdown due to stress of the season, and a quick phone call to a friend to see if I could flake out on my responsibility, I realized I did have a choice - bake or buy. I could buy a dozen or 2 cupcakes for $15-$20, but that would really defeat the purpose in more ways than one.

So, then my plan was to use box-of-cake (you know that it tastes just fine, and saves a ton of time) and make a nice buttercream. But, while I was shopping at Smart and Final for the mix, I noticed that everything was on sale. SALE! Each box-of-cake mix was only .99 cents! And, the cans-of-frosting were only $1.69. I felt a little twinge of guilt right before I plopped them in my cart and made my way to the register.

Add in eggs, oil, cupcake papers and sprinkles, and I am not joking when I tell you that I made 80 of them for less than $20. Easy AND guilt free.

The night of the event I went over to the area where the food was being sold, and to my horror I saw probably HUNDREDS of cupcakes. Hundreds! Oh well, I thought, so I brought "sand to the beach"... whatever.

Every single cupcake was sold by the end of the evening. Phew!

Will I do this again next time? You bet! Especially for the kids. Especially for $20.

Gift Advice

this is just my dad's side, even missing a couple!

I have a HUGE family. It is so extended that I celebrate 3 separate Christmas gift giving events. Christmas Day is with my husband's family, Christmas Eve is with my Dad's family and the Barter Family Christmas Party is celebrated with all of my Mom's side of the family.

So, here is my question: I have drawn the name of my sister-in-law for the grown-up gift exchange, and I'm torn with what to purchase. My fabulous sister-in-law Kim, is a working mother of two and a recent breast cancer survivor. Young and hip and super smart, I want to get her something slightly more personal than what I have chosen to give my brother-in-law (not that there is anything wrong with "The Book of Basketball").

My dollar limit is $50 (max!)...

I'm just now realizing how close we are to Christmas, and just how far behind I am. I've been meaning to post about some home decorating (on a tiny budget) that has been going on around my house, but, well, I HAVE TO CONCENTRATE ON CHRISTMAS!!

Let's start with the family Christmas card. I really do enjoy sending out a funny card. I think it's probably in my genes from my dad's side of the family. When I was young, I remember him signing our family holiday greeting cards with as random a name as he could come up with. There were fairly tame signatures like, "Mickey and Minnie Mouse", and then there was my all time favorite - "President and Mrs. Carter" (back in the day that was some cutting edge stuff!).

So, to outdo last year's Barnes Family Christmas card:

I think I've come up with a doozy, but you all will have to wait to see it. Let me just say that my husband is already irritated that he will have to pose for not just one portrait, but two.

It may look like Halloween is my favorite holiday, but in reality, its pretty far down my list - somewhere between Groundhog Day and Administrative Professional's Day. Having kids generally complicates matters, in that the pressure to decorate, at least for major holidays, is worse than the peer pressure I received in High School to ditch class. These days, I just expect that if the neighbor's houses are decorated, I need to (remind me to send a thank you note to the neighbors).

Anyway, a couple of weeks back, I noticed Martha had put together this little number, and it has been in the back of my mind ever since.

I love the dramatic effect you can get when you repeat the same element over and over and over and over and over... oh, well, you get it.

So, searching online for a simplified (sorry Martha, your template is way to complex) I did find an outline of a bat, that I then changed to fit my needs.

Next, I racked my brain to figure out what I could cut it out of that would be a least slightly weather proof (I do live in southern California, so its not like we have snow to contend with), and practically free.

Ah ha!

The leftover black plates from the Pirate birthday party! I traced the template onto the back of the plates, cut them out, and used blue painters tape to adhere them to the front of my house.

I did run out of plates for the full effect that I was hoping to achieve, so I think I'll run next door and ask if I can borrow some from my neighbor.

For some reason, I don't really know why, but I've gotten this reputation for being able to design event invitations?

Okay, maybe I do know why... but I still think its pretty funny when my sister's sister-in-law, or my other sister's college roommate call me up for help. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy a good invite now and again, but it is like they say, "When it rains, it hails the size of watermelons directly on your head".

It's Thursday morning, and I have about 6 hours before I leave for the weekend. This is the weekend of the annual Southern California MS Challenge Walk, 50 miles over 3 days to find the cure. I'm sure you already know all about it because I've only written about it a million times over the last 6 months or so.

A couple of things I just wanted to say (really quick because I have yet to pack)...

First, this is the 4th year I have made (obviously with the help of my Aunt Janet) a quilt with the previous year’s walk t-shirts to raffle off to the walkers, volunteers, family and friends who participate. I am happy to say, that it is done – as of last night at 11pm – nothing like waiting till the last minute. Isn’t it beautiful?

Second, every year on the same exact weekend of the Walk, my husband travels to Oregon for his annual cycling trip across the state. The same exact weekend. Every year. So, we do call upon our friends and family to help us care for the kids. They graciously come and stay, carpool and feed, entertain and love our children for 3 days.

Thank you Pat, Gina, Missy, Julia, Brenda and Tova.

So, think of me? While I walk? I'll probably be complaining, and growing a new set of blisters, and definitely having a good time being silly, seeing old friends, and raising awareness for this disease that needs a cure.

Why?

That really is my only question. Yes the economy is bad. Yes unemployment is at record highs. But, come on!

Here is what happened: I finally decided to get off my rear end and go to the gym. The kids were with their favorite babysitter, I uploaded my favorite workout songs to my ipod, put on my super cute new workout outfit and headed to the gym. I had to leave my purse in the car because I was going to have lunch with myself afterwords and I obviously needed some money to do so. After parking, I shoved my cute new purse under the seat, locked the car and went inside. A little over an hour later, after a really nice workout (it was, and I'm not even lying) I saw this:

Sad. But, true. Someone broke the passenger window, opened the door and took my purse. I do blame myself for being just so stupid to think that my purse was safe, I'm also pretty mad at myself for thinking my purse was safe.

They had a maximum window of 15 minutes (between my gym arrival time, and when mall security left the note on my window), here is what they got:

Tea (& Cake) for 10

For my daughter Autumn's 5th Birthday party, she asked for a Tea Party theme. I'm pretty sure the reason she asked is because only a few months earlier, she watched me throw a tea party for my mother's birthday - and it was pink and sparkly and grown-up.

So, as usual, I did some research online to see what kind of inspiration I could come up with. The first thing I uncovered, was how to make a teapot cake (more on that nightmare later) and also, I found a very cute teapot piñata.

With my research complete, I began as I always do, with the invitations...

Invitations

To start, I drew a simple teapot shape. Using the airbrush tool in Adobe Photoshop I outlined the edges in pink and added polka dots and decorated the "lid" in shades of green. After printing these on my home color printer, I (not too carefully) cut out the shape and used a dimensional tape to adhere the teapot to a flat pink card. Do a cute little matching label (thanks Avery), throw them in the mail, and there you go!

This ended up being a little bit of extra work than I'm used to - what with all the cutting - but we were only inviting 9 little girls (and two of them sibblings) I really only had to make eight. Easy, right?

Decorations

Two words: flowers and teapots (paper teapots). Those really were the only decorations - simple, very inexpensive and visually stunning (if I do say so myself).

If you've ever read any of my birthday party how-tos, you have see these fishbowl style vases before. I own three of the small size, and one large one and they are the most versatile decorating staple I own. For this party, I purchased pink and white roses from the grocery store (they were on sale, how can you go wrong with that?) and arranged them with two shades of pink curling ribbon from my ribbon box, and placed them around the house.

As for the paper teapots, my mother drew these 3 teapot shapes which I then transferred to a thick cardstock along with the invitation teapot (no computers here ladies). Using 8.5x11" paper in different shades/patterns of pink, I traced and cut teapots until I could trace and cut no more. Using regular old scotch tape, I affixed a couple dozen of these to the windows and glass doors around the house.

Food

As this was a tea party, coming up with food items was a snap! When your guest list is just kids, make the food choices appetizing for them - if not necessarily for you. We offered apple scones, pumpkin muffins, turkey and cheese sandwiches and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

To make the sandwiches look slightly more fancy, I used alternating pieces of wheat and white bread cut into triangles without the crust (kids don't like the crust anyway, right?) You could also use a cookie or biscuit cutter for more variety.

I also served a vanilla DECAF tea (oh please make sure it is decaffeinated) with lots of milk, and lemonade on the fancy china. The girls were so careful and respectful of the dishes - it was so nice!

Activity

I'm sure everyone understands me when I say, at these birthday parties I try to save money whenever possible. This craft project is no different. On 6ft tables (from my garage) I set out baskets full of art supplies (from my kids art supply bins) and cut more teapots out of cardstock for decorating with rubber stamps, stickers, glitter glue, crayons and markers. The only item I purchased, were some cute little plastic tea cups with saucers to decorate, and to be part of the party favor bag.

Right after the craft, the kids all played dress up. I placed the full length mirror from my closet against the wall, and filled up a toy box full of our dress up things, as well as a few items we borrowed from a neighbor. It was a HIT! These little girls who came already dressed in cute party clothes piled on more sparkly frilly layers and topped that off with a crown, tiara or fairy wings.

Games

Does anyone else have an unnatural obsession with the Cake Walk activity from their childhood? I can not help myself but to come up with any/every excuse to plan a cake walk! Using a (borrowed) heart shaped cake pan, box-of-cake mix and can-of-frosting, I made 10 of the cutest pink sprinkle covered cakes. I put them all on a 6" cardboard cake round and added a paper doily for good measure.

You've never heard of a Cake Walk before? Well, let me explain how it works. First, mark a large numbered circle on the ground with chalk (if you can't use chalk then whatever you do use has to stand up to marching and running and stomping little feet so choose carefully). We had 10 guests so we numbered our spots on the ground 1 through 10 (you can certainly have more numbers than that, but, depending on how many guests you have you can always take turns). We played music as the girls marched in a circle, and when the music stops everyone stands on one number.

Technically, you then pull a number out of a "hat" and call it out - whomever is standing on the number gets to go choose a cake as their prize. Now, these girls were all 5 and under - and I think everyone here remembers my personal guideline of "non-competitive games"- so we did stretch the truth a little and called out numbers that didn't necessarily correspond with what was written on the paper, just so that each child won one cake, fair and square (and I didn't have to make more than 10 of those cute little heart shaped cakes).

Now if that wasn't enough, we also had a Piñata. Not just any Piñata, a teapot Piñata!

Cake

Let's just say, it is always a smart idea to have a back up plan... just in case. A bakery nearby should do the trick.

This cake was a nightmare for me to make! I'm not even going to tell you how to make it, there are so many places online that you can go to that give you step by step instructions, like here and here.

My problems began when the "directions" I found online called for angel food cake baked in a round Pyrex glass mixing bowl. Well, after the angel food blew up, I switched to regular cake (box of cake mix) and baked cake in the mixing bowl 3 times. What a mess! I just wasn't grasping the idea that the regular cake was to heavy to hold itself up. At about 11 o'clock the night before, I gave up, and told myself I would order a cake the next morning at 10am. At about 7am, I gave myself one last chance to put it together. I slowly assembled the bottom and top halves with a sliver of the third round in between. About a ton of buttercream later, it was finished - and it even looked pretty cute.

Tip #1: Try using cardstock for the handle and the spout.
Tip #2: Use a beautiful platter rather than a cake board covered in tin foil.

But in the end, with the look on my daughter's face, it was kind of worth it. Don't you think?

To wrap it up, I hope you have gotten at least a couple good ideas to help you
with your next tea party. Just use your creativity to make any theme your own, spend as little as possible and make it look homemade - even if it isn't!

Good news and Bad news

4th of July and Green Valley Lake

Back in the late 70s, my parents bought a vacation fixer in Green Valley Lake. After my dad and my grandpa gutted and rebuilt the inside of this lakeside cabin, we started spending our summers up there. The photo above is of my sisters and me, c.1980 (notice our super stylish feathered hair-dos). I have one fond memory after the next I could bore you all to tears with - but since you all are so busy, I guess I'll save them for another day.

4th of July was a pretty big holiday to celebrate up there, always culminating with watching fireworks exploding over Lake Arrowhead from our lookout vantage point, miles away, at "the Rocks" (apparently the most original nickname we could come up with for an outcropping with an unencumbered view of said lake).

Invitation for a Donation

I've been hard at work with my fundraising, fundraising, FUNDRAISING!

but, in this economy I am very concerned that I will not be able to make my minimum goal of $2,500 (yes, two thousand five hundred dollars) in order to participate in the Southern California 50 Mile MS Challenge Walk. (read my story here)

I had an idea.

A few months ago, Aimée over at Under the High Chair asked if I could help her out with her son's 1st birthday party invitation. I've never met Aimée, we just started to get to know each other through our blogs (love hers!). So, I ended up making a cute invite, and she gave her son a fabulous 1st birthday party.

Then, I got an email from a reader who loved the Aimée's invite, asking if I would make an invite for her daughter. Yes, of course!

Wine Parties and Castle Cakes

Out of the kindness of her heart (and heartfelt pity upon my inability to cook) my good friend Kira, (and partner in crime) did all the catering for my recent Wine Tasting Party and MS Fundraiser. She worked her rear end off... you should have seen the food! If I had a single photo of it, I would show you the food.

Anyway, in repayment of her bending over backwards to help me out, I made her son Max's 6th birthday cake. His party theme was "Lego Knights", and Kira has already posted all of her great party ideas here and here. As much talent as Kira has in the kitchen, it is nowhere near the flour and baking pans - nowhere. So, after a little research here and there online, I settled on this little number. Sorry about the quality photos, folks, I had about 3.5 seconds to shoot it before all hands were upon it.

delish!

Super easy to make! All it is, is 2 layers of 9x9 square chocolate and two layers of 6x6 round vanilla covered in blue buttercream and tons of candy. I'm sure there are at least a thousand examples of it online with instructions. Bottom line here, it was fun and easy for me to do because I didn't have to deal with all the other party details because...well... it wasn't my party.

I have a good feeling that you may be finding some Knight party decorations sometime soon in the Paper & Cake etsy shop... check back soon!

Ready for more Pirate Birthday Party ideas? Well, thanks for being patient because this info is worth it's weight in gold!

Dress Up

Every pirate needs at least a good hat and a sparkly sash. Oh, and a tattoo or two too. These felt hats were fairly inexpensive and easy to customize with some metallic silver dimensional fabric paint from Michael's. I wrote every child's name in under 10 minutes, me, Mrs. Print-it-out-on-the-computer-and-trace-it-so-it-is-perfect, freehanded all 23 names.

The black and gold sashes were cut from 4 yards of fabric purchased with a coupon (thanks Aunt Janet) from our local chain store.

And to help those pirates feel more, well, like pirates, temporary tattoos work every time.

Games

Pirate Ship Battle

While doing some Pirate-y research one day, I happened upon one fabulous idea over at Party Planning Mom. She made two large cardboard pirate ships and had a game involving paper canon balls.

So, putting my own spin this super idea, I had access to giant 4ft. by 6ft. ultra heavy duty cardboard server boxes from my husband's work (every time he sees a new one, he brings it home - so we've made; a house, a market, a cafe and a pirate ship). Using a sawzall, he cut two of them down into ship-shaped shapes. After some failed experimenting with (notches and slits) we decided on a roll of duct tape to hold them together.

The night before the party, my friend Julia came by (as she always does, bless her, to help with all the last minute ridiculousness) and helped me paint them, using leftover cans of brown, blue and red that I found on the "old paint shelf".

To round out this "game" (if you've ever been here before, you know I am a fan of the non competitive games - everyone is a winner!), I made canon balls out of wadded up paper covered in aluminum foil. Not wanting to be wasteful, I used the ripped out pages of outdated catalogues and covered them in the smallest piece of foil possible. There were probably a hundred of the balls, and grown-ups and kids alike threw these almost constantly throughout the 3 hour party.

Treasure Hunt

What would you do with a couple hundred necklaces and 300 plastic coins? Well hide them of course! We draped and sprinkled pirate treasure from stem to stern, I mean all over the house, inside and out - just randomly. Using their decorated tresure loot bags, the kids picked up what they could find as part of their "goody bag" to bring home with them. We didn't set any rules for this one, in fact tresure hunting went on throughout the party (and yes, I am still finding necklaces... especially outside).

Craft Activity

My dear friend Kira posted a do-it-yourself pirate craft activity on her blog. She illustrated a blank map and a bunch of little "icons" to go with it, to make your own treasure map. Again, I took it a little further by formatting the little icons to fit on a sheet of clear Avery address labels. I wanted the children to create their treasure map and immediately be able to use it - without having to wait for glue to dry.

Also at the craft table, I set out brown paper lunch sacks (for treasure collecting) with name tags for them, along with crayons, markers and self-adhesive jewels for decorating till your heart's content.

Cake

I LOVED making this ridiculous cake! It was very easy... well... comparatively. I used plain old box of cake mix (it works just fine and tastes good too) and splurged by frosting with a chocolate mousse buttercream.

1} Bake 2 9x12 cakes, cool them completely. Using the template below and a long serrated knife, cut your cake into 4 sections.

2} cut one of the long rectangles into triangles that will form the bow (front end of the ship).

3} Take a piece of cardboard, and cut it into the shape of the finished size/shape, to use on the bottom of the cake. That is, one rectangle plus one triangle.

4} Place your first rectangular layer on the cardboard and frost (or use any filling of your choice). Place second rectangular layer and frost. Repeat with third layer.

5} Next, stack and frost two small rectangles overhanging at the back. Use wooden skewers to hold cake in place. Trim skewers to height by first inserting all the way into the cake, mark the height with a pen, pull them back out and cut at your mark, then reinsert.

6} Stack and frost in between each of the 5 triangular layers that make up the bow of the ship. Again, use wooden skewers to hold in place. Your final side-view should look like this diagram below.

7} Frost entire ship until covered, and refrigerate.

8} Place cake on a larger cake board to decorate according to the photo below. The water is strips of "Blue Raspberry Sour Belt", I used red and white m&m's, black licorice for the anchor (this was difficult, to get it to stay in the shape my friend Julia used twist ties to hold it in place overnight), and made sails on my computer - again held in place with wooden skewers.

As if a cake wasn't enough, I made a few cupcakes as well. I used the same box of cake mix, same frosting, and designed a coordinating cupcake "wrapper" to round out the look.

I tried extra hard to save money by using what I already had around the house. A pirate theme is simple to accessorize and easy to plan. Use some creative thinking to make it your own, spend as little as possible and make it look homemade - even if it isn't!

Pirate Birthday Party {part one}

Captain Jack

Well. I did it. After all the research, cleaning, shopping, borrowing, building and baking, it's finally over. What's over, you ask?

The big 0h - four. Captain Jack's Pirate themed 4th birthday party. It was SO much fun. I am still recovering. For this party especially, you'll probably notice a reoccurring theme: as much as possible, use what you can find at home.

Want to hear how I did it? There is SOOO much to talk about! Let's start with:

Invitation

A couple years back, I designed an invitation for a school fundraiser with a Pirate theme. Going back to those old files, I was able to reuse some of the artwork. The background "parchment paper" is actually an inexpensive stock photo, and the compass, skull and crossbones, and ship were adapted from clip art that I had found online.

I used my trusty (but cheep) color ink jet to print double sided, and mailed them off in envelopes I found buried deep in the closet.

I did run out of ink getting ready for this party, and I know ink is not cheep. While out purchasing more, my local Office Max told me about their refill policy. You can have your own cartridge refilled, or you can buy someone else's refilled cartridge for only $10. You heard it, not $40 or $50, but $10. And, it worked fine.

These invites are much more complex than the ones I usually design. If I had to do it all over again? I might run out to the scrapbooking store, purchase 12x12 sheets of pirate-y paper, and cut to fit envelopes I already owned. Using my trusty printer, I would print some wording out on vellum and tape the vellum on top of the pirate themed scrapbooking paper - MUCH easier! Don't you think?

Decorations

I began with the pennant banner. I knew these could be done quickly, but have the most impact. Keeping in mind that I did not want to use my ink jet printer to print fields of black (that is what will use up the ink in a hurry!), I chose to design the different components using mostly borders of reds and blacks, printing on yellow cardstock for some, and printing on regular white paper for the rest. I did mount some of the pennants to black construction paper - that I already had around the house.

I punched two holes in each pennant, and used household twine to hang above doors and windows and over the kitchen island.

During a trip to the fabric store with my aunt for another project, I found some black and white fabric remnants on the sale rack. I spent a total of just over $4 for the pirate flag fabric. Enlarging my skull and crossbones image, I cut it out of the white felt, and glued it to the black fabric. Again, using the glue, I folded over the top edge and inserted my twine (yup, straight out of the junk drawer) through it, to hang on the wall.

I ALWAYS use the wall mounting tapes and hooks from 3M, I can count on them to not rip the drywall or damage the ceiling.

No you are not imagining it, you have seen my popcorn bar before. It was so popular at my daughter's birthday party (and I already have the jars), that I just added new labels to match the pirate pennant banners.

I also covered every horizontal surface with plain old fashioned paper chains. These were 1 in. by 6 in. black construction paper secured with a single staple. At the end of a section, I taped on an under inflated black balloon, to represent the "ball" portion of a "ball and chain".

I was also able to put to use the MONSTER of a toy Pirate Ship that my son got for Christmas, 2 years ago. It made the perfect addition to the decor.

...these are very corny headlines, but my point is, in this economy I am very concerned that I will not be able to make my minimum goal of $2,500 (yes, two thousand five hundred dollars) in order to participate in the Southern California 50 Mile MS Challenge Walk. (read my story here)

I've never met Aimée, we just started to get to know each other through our blogs (love hers!). So, I ended up making a cute invite, and she gave her son a fabulous 1st birthday party.

Then, I got an email from a reader who loved the Aimée's invite, asking if I would make an invite for her daughter. Yes, of course!

Ultra practical gifts, nearly free packaging

My daughter is very "snoopy" these days, so I have to be quite careful about what I look at when she is around.

Take my blog for example. Today, I would like to share a little tip about Easter baskets, but I also need to be sure she doesn't see it until she is at least 11 (at what age do you let them down gently about who buys for the Easter bunny?).

In the past, I have purchased a new basket each year for both of my kids for their gifts from the Easter bunny. And as everyone is a little in the same boat with finances, I was in a bit of a quandary as to how to pull off the gift without the new basket.

Enter: Cellophane. And some bright orange and yellow plaid ribbon. I already had the cellophane (from tons of previous basket wrapping projects) and although I did buy the ribbon, it was only $2 for 10 yards.

One last tip: although it may be too late this year, next year think about what the Easter bunny might bring that is fun and exciting, yet ultra practical. This year, I filled their gift bags with new swimsuits and towels. I was going to have to buy them anyway - so why not kill two bunnies with one stone? Wait, that doesn't sound right.

Cowboy Birthday Party

I can sum this one up in two simple words, "YEEEE HAW!"

When my son Jack turned 2, I put together a little birthday get-together, covered in cowboy hats and sheriff badges. It was adorable (if I do say so myself).

Invitation
I knew, from past experience, that a small cellophane party favor bag makes an excellent (and super cheap) party invitation envelope. For this invite, I purchased 12"x12" sheets of red "bandanna" patterned scrapbooking paper for the background, and 8.5 x 11 sheets of vellum to print the wording on. Then I used some household twine from the junk drawer to make a tiny lasso that was hot glued to the top center of the finished piece.

tip: The finished invite is about 3 1/8" x 6 1/4", if you plan on mailing in a party favor bag, use a little cardstock to back it up, print your addresses on white mailing labels, and take it to the post office to check postage rates.

Decorations If you've ever read my blog before, you know that I love covering my windows with themed decorations. Regular old scotch tape works perfectly on windows, and you never have to worry about accidentally peeling the drywall paper along with the paint.

I purchased some plastic wagon wheels and steer skulls from Oriental Trading Co. and hung them everywhere. In addition, I made dozens of "Wanted" posters, in two styles, using photos of all the guests invited to the party. They were a hit! (and they were practically free). To round out the look, we used red and blue bandannas and red and white gingham tablecloths.

Activity

Usually, for my kids parties, we have some sort of a craft project involving stickers, glitter and glue. This party was a little different in that we did not have a sit down project, rather, stations set up for; using homemade playdough, playing with the water table, donning cowboy dress up items, and painting with water.

Cake

This cake was fairly easy to make, and has the design potential to be over the top.

I started with two 9" x 12" cakes. Just use a box of cake, it tastes good and it makes everything go faster and easier.

Using the template below, I carefully cut each layer separately, frosted the top of the bottom layer, and placed the top layer gently on top. I did do a thin "crumb coat" (thinly frosting the entire cake so that all the crumbs are trapped beneath the frosting where they can't escape - especially useful if the cake is chocolate and the frosting is anything lighter than chocolate).

Next, I used a toothpick to outline where and how I wanted the design of the boot. I frosted the dark chocolate frosting in the middle area first, spread the lighter brown frosting second, and piped on the final details last. As soon as the cake frosting was finished, I piped on the "Happy Birthday" message on the cake board, and sprinkled shredded wheat cereal around the boot edges.

Top with a sheriff badge and there you have it!

Since we had a ton of guests, I also made a batch of cupcakes. To fit the western theme, I piped a "brand" on the top with contrasting frosting.

Easter 2006

We always have a great big Easter celebration with my family. Brunch after church and then, of course, the Easter egg hunt! I do look forward to it each year, although, like Santa Clause, it is getting harder and harder to pass myself off as the Easter Bunny.

This year will be the most difficult by far, mostly because of this Easter Collection of downloadable paper party supplies from Paper & Cake. My daughter knows that Kira and I designed these, so, I guess it's either break the news gently? or tell everyone I know to use these so I don't feel so bad that I can't. sniff sniff.

Why I Walk

my team, "Momemtum" in 2008 ~ four of us High School friends!

In 2003, I signed up for the 3 Day MS Challenge Walk because one of my oldest friends told me she was just diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

My friend Rita and I met in Jr. High, and have done everything from skiing to attending traffic school, together. She is the reason I met my husband and the reason my first car had so many dents in the fenders.

As I was signing up for the MS Walk online this year, my daughter came in to ask me what I was doing. It was really hard to explain, you try telling 7 year old why money is needed to find a cure - and what a cure is. I think I talked too long about it because she yawned and then smiled and said, “okay mommy”.

Later, while in the kitchen making peanut butter sandwiches, she came in and started dumping change out onto the island counter top. She emptied her entire purse and said, “Is this enough mommy?” It was the sum total of $8.01, which included 2 Sacagawea dollars, that she received from the tooth fairy. I guess she did understand what I was saying.

As I was leaving the room to add her donation to my walk page, she called out after me, “Can MS spread from Auntie Rita to other people?” I said no, it’s just in her own body. She said, “that's really lucky! Now she can go where ever she wants!”

I love that kid.

This will be my sixth year walking in the Southern California MS Challenge 3 Day Walk, a 50 mile walk over three days, from Carlsbad to San Diego, to raise awareness of and money for multiple sclerosis. You too can make a difference by donating – every little bit counts!

Nancy Drew Birthday Party, Part 2

Alright, let's get right down to it... How many mom's are just terrified of organizing a mystery hunt? Okay I guess it was just me.

For this, part 2, of the NDBP (Nancy Drew Birthday Party) we will uncover simple yet theme inspired party crafts, and how you too can plan a big mystery hunt.

Craft Project:
To set up, we used a 6ft table, covered in paper and little baskets full of supplies. There was glittery foam stickers, paint, dot markers, glue sticks, jewels, sticky foam sheets and crayons.

For that "official" feeling, I created an "ID Badge" for each child, with their name, a space for them to draw their own face and put a fingerprint. After they were done with their badges, I put them in plastic holders and tied them with a ribbon to wear around their necks.

Next, each child had a clue journal to decorate. I found these at (where else) Oriental Trading Co. These were a spiral bound notebook with a canvas feeling cover, good for paint or even crayons.

Mystery Hunt:
I was able to hide most of the clues before the party even started, but a few were left to the very last minute, just in case someone stumbled upon it. I had the moms take the kids out front until everything was finished, and while they were out there, they were given some guidelines (okay, rules). I divided the kids into two teams - I did this myself so that no feelings would be hurt by a child not being picked - and put a strip of colored tape on their shirt (blue or orange). Each team had a mom helper also with tape on them.

Both teams would search for the same clues, just in a different order (then maybe it wouldn't feel like a race, and nobody would get trampled). Each clue was put into a ziplock bag with a strip of team tape on it, so you wouldn't accidentally grab the other team's clue. Some of the baggies also had a puzzle piece to collect (more on that at the end of the mystery hunt description).

Here were my clues, printed out on plain paper and taped to a 4x6 card of our purple and black question mark design.

1) a close up photo of my washing machine
2) inside the washing machine, "not the wet but the DRY"
3) inside the dryer, "Mirror, mirror on the wall... Who is the fairest of them all?"
4) taped to my full length closet mirror, "find a way to press PLAY" (this was printed backwards)
5) the tv/DVD player in the bedroom, when they pressed play it revealed a close up photo of the numbered storage lockers in our mudroom
6) inside the number 32 locker, "You are nearby, which TWO numbers added equal SEVEN?"
7) inside locker number 25, "A secret massage has been MAILED to you, hurry!"
8) inside the mailbox along with a magnifying glass was the clue printed very tiny, "go to the shelf with all the toys. find the toy car with your team color tape on the bottom. you will be given your next clue."
9) they handed the mom their team toy car and were given a close up photo of the microwave in our pretend kitchen
10) inside the toy microwave, "LEMON aid for sale! Get your LEMON aid here!"
11) at the lemon tree in the backyard was a baggie with play dough in it and a clue that read, "I’m lost! Can you help me find my home?"
12) in the playdough drawer (yes, i have a play dough drawer), "Don’t get WET in this place you get CLEAN, just look for your clue near the DRAIN."
13) in the bathtub was a cell phone, a mom was standing nearby and called the number to tell the team to meet at the fireplace.

If your family is at that stage where the children really don't feel comfortable with competitions, then this might work well for you. Remember the puzzle pieces they were collecting? Well, each team only had half of the pieces for the final puzzle, they had to all come together to put the pieces in to solve the mystery of the "What is missing from this party?" The puzzle led them to the pantry where the goodie bags were hiding. It was SPECTACULAR! and it took the kids a while to get through the game.

Yes, Today is My Birthday!

And I'm turning 32 years old... (again)

And what a day it has been! To celebrate, my mom, my sister Missy and her little girls came over to play. We had coffee time, we had craft time, we had run and scream time (it was raining all day), we had home made playdough time (note to self: buy more cream of tartar) and after lunch, we had CAKE TIME!

My sister was so sweet to bring over this fabulous home made cake. It was delicious. I sure do love her.

Nancy Drew Birthday Party, Part 1

What is purple and black and has fingerprints all over it?

This party of course! In this first installment of all things mysterious, lets talk decorations. It was tough to pick out a color scheme for this one, because Nancy Drew doesn't necessarily radiate any particular hue. So, I put on my thinking cap and chose purple and black.

I started with plain black construction paper, and cut large question marks till I couldn't any more. Then, I found some free images online of fingerprints and bootprints and printed them on repositionable clear window decals (inkjet compatible, available at Staples). If you have ever read any of my other posts about our birthday parties, you already know that there are a ton of windows in my home, perfect for adhering all party décor. Oh, but the bootprints were (obviously) stuck to the floor.

Moving on to birthday banners. I've never made one of these banners where you spell out the name in individual letters and hang them adjacent to one another, so here is my crazy version. Each letter was layered in photoshop with a fingerprint and a touch of purple. Then I had them printed at Costco's photo center as 5x7 photographs, on sale, and very cheap compared to buying more ink for my awful color printer. I mounted each 5x7 on a larger piece of sparkly silver paper and strung with dark purple ribbon. I think it turned out okay, don't you?

We decided on a popcorn "bar" as one element of the snack table. I saw the coolest jar labels here and borrowed the idea for these fabulous jars I found at Cost Plus World Market. I used a little more of that black construction paper in 6 x 12" strips and wound them into a cone shape (with one simple staple) to serve up this popular snack.

Lastly, I had so much leftover paper and scraps and supplies from invitations and trial printing of fingerprints and letters, that I used them for garlands. I used an 1.5" punch for the papers and backed them with an 1.5" Avery round sticker (printed with, what else, question marks) and strung them with 1/8" silver ribbon. Scotch tape works pretty well on painted drywall and (usually) comes off cleanly.

Birthday Party for my Mom

I love my mom, and these days I feel pretty grateful for our relationship. She turned 65 at the end of January, so my 2 sisters and I threw her a little party. There were 9 of us, including my mom's sister, her ex-sister-in-law (because when you love your sister-in-law you don't have to divorce her too) two cousins, my sisters and (of course) me.

We had a lovely brunch of; egg casserole, Baked Blueberry French Toast (thanks Aimee!), fruit, scones and coffee (the most important food group, i think). The food was good but the conversation and laughter was the best!

When it was time for the birthday gifts, my sisters and I surprised our mom with a piece of jewelry. Not just any jewelry, but a hand made silver charm necklace spelling out each of my mother's daughter's names with their children's names on each charm respectively.

Gorgeous.

I can't wait till next year, when we will celebrate my mom's birthday again. I do have this sneaky suspicion that she will probably be turning 65 again.

Event Opening Invitation

And you thought I only did birthday parties.

This makes 2 down, not that many to go on my list. This is an invitation I created using photoshop and illustrator and lots and lots of emails back and forth to the museum. The American Museum of Ceramic Art that is. The have an upcoming show centered around Pre-Columbian pottery, also featuring two contemporary artists.

I feel like I really connect with all things ceramic, mostly because I had clay in my hand from infancy. My mother (director of said museum) started out as a potter (well, not started out but, well, you get the point) she threw pots for 30 years, 3 kids, a second marriage and one major hand injury. I really get a kick out of working with my mom, my most important client.

Anyway, here is the (not quite final) invitation (but close enough).

Nancy Drew Birthday Party, Here We Come!

One down... six thousand to go. Well, maybe not quite that many.

For this invitation, I scanned the front and back of a Nancy Drew book to get color and text placement ideas. Then, I took some very silly photos of my daughter peeking around a bedroom closet doorway.

In photoshop, I tried (unsuccessfully) to give the photo a more "painterly" quality, and ended up with something not very close to what I envisioned but what I spent far less time trying to achieve. Then, using Illustrator, I created the yellow boxes, text and bar code.

Next, after a simple upload to CostcoPhotoCenter.com, I will glue/tape the two 5x7 photos back to back and mail off in a nice white envelope.

Done!

Let's Get Down to Business

I know, this photo has nothing to do with my post here, but this is
my grandma, and I've been thinking so much about her lately.

Okay people, enough with the stalling... let's get cracking!

For the next week I have a HUGE to do list:

opening invitation for the American Museum of Ceramic Art's new show (starts end of Feb)
designs for invitation to a preschool fundraiser
menu plan for my mom's birthday brunch
organize and order photos for scrapbooking weekend in Big Bear (end of Jan, woohoo!)
new designs for Paper & Cake (Superbowl Party and Valentine's Day)
new orders for See Jack Draw

Where do I start? I am actually a little overwhelmed at the moment. I think I need an assistant. Does anyone out there want to be my assistant? The pay sucks but the coffee is good.

So throughout the course of the next few days, I will post as many of these items as I can - let's just get this list DONE!

Hostess Gift Sets from Paper & Cake

Family Holiday Card

About three seconds ago, I clicked the "order now" button from Kodak Gallery's website. I feel as though a weight has finally lifted from my shoulders!

To make this card, I purchased several yards of saturated green felt from the fabric store (on sale!) and taped it high on the wall. Three of my family members posed in front of it while my trusty tripod took several photos (before the felt succombed to gravity). Meanwhile, my daughter decorated her gingerbread house. She had such a good time!

Then it was all about the photoshop. I found a tutorial, online, for removing the "green screen" from the background - using a green fabric just makes it fairly simple to "cut" the people out of the background. I had to play around with the coloring of both photographs, the "gingerbread" photo was red in comparison to the "family portrait" photo. I also had to put shadows in behind the "family portrait" photo to make it look as though we had the same lighting as the other photo.

And voila! Sillyness ensues.

Well they've done it again! Those super creative girls from Paper & Cake have made available the first of two gorgeous downloadable holiday tablescapes.

Alright, you've caught me. I'm one of those two girls from Paper & Cake... and I just can't stop myself. We had such a good time with this damask themed grouping of napkin rings, wine glass tags and invitations (and more!), that we are doing a second theme.

Yes, yes, I know, it's not even Thanksgiving yet, but aren't you feeling the pressure? The decorating, the shopping, the entertaining... ahhhhhh! It's enough to make any Martha wanna-be scream.

What I've been thinking about lately, is what our family Christmas card will look like this year. Being a graphic designer and a fairly decent photographer (meaning I know how to use photoshop), I think there is some expectation that it really be a winner. I've got to hit it out of the park. It must be one for the books.

Dinner Party

yup, these are my cream puffs... yummy, huh?

I'm having the girls over for "Dinner Club" tonight, and I have to admit, I'm a bit nervous. I am not a cook.

Last month, we all met at Kira's house for Moroccan flatbread, hummus, eggplant and white bean dip, shrimp and pineapple skewers. The month before? We ate grilled shrimp and scallops with cantaloupe and black bean salsa at Brenda's. I am feeling the pressure.

If I can't wow them with dinner (how about sliders with grilled onions, sweet potato fries and salad?), then I'll wow them with what I can do… homemade Cream Puffs!

School Carnival ~ Cake Walk

Last Friday, my daughter's school held their annual Carnival. One of the activities scheduled was a cake walk. One of my own fondest childhood memories, is of the Cake Walk from my grammar school carnival. You can imagine how quickly I jumped at the chance to make cakes.

From deep in the unused-pan-cabinet in my kitchen I found an unused mini-bundt cake pan that was probably a wedding gift. Who knew it would finally come in handy more than 13 years later? Smart and Final supplied the box-o-cake mix (sorry, I just couldn't do from scratch this time) I did make frosting myself and used yellow and orange sprinkles from Surfas.

How did I come up with this fantastic packaging you ask? Well, it was Kira (of Tangarang) to the rescue! She picked up some small colorful paper plates (which were cut into smaller circles), curling ribbon and celo bags from Alin party supply.

How many did we end up with? Well, 36 was all we could manage, but it was enough for the Carnival. The Cake Walk made a good amount of money (to send our 8th graders to Washington D.C.) but more importantly the families had such a good time!

I'm almost speechless. Thank you so much to Michelle of Sweet Mady's Paper for giving me a Kreativ Blogger award! It's kind of nice to think that someone else likes a party as much as I do.

Being relatively new to this whole "award" thing, apparently there are some rules to follow? I am to post 6 things about myself, and then bestow this award upon 6 fellow bloggers by listing them in this post.

hmmm... 6 things about me:

1} I hide in the bathroom. I've recently renamed it the "sensory depravation chamber" because it is all white, and when you turn the fan on you can not hear the children screaming at each other.

2} I've been married to a republican for 13 years.

3} My therapist told me I had a touch of some disorder? I think she called it "obsessive compulsive"... but I just don't see it.

4} I can't cook and don't really like it. I love to bake, but I'm not very good at it.

5} Before my daughter was born, I knew in my heart she would be a boy. Before my son was born, I knew in my heart he would be a girl. How did I get those so wrong?

6} I obsessively listen to the same 8 Dixie Chicks songs in my car almost every day (to the point of my 3 year old son knowing ALL the words)
